Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. While she was a small girl, Catherine Ford struggled with an obsessive compulsive disorder. She also experienced anxiety because of the word association. Ford started acting in her teen years and joined a member of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she was not a fit. Ford returned for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, after her fourth application she was admitted. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford was not able to finish her studies in 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first appearance on TV in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such television shows as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London Burning. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre led her to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedy, that were added to her repertoire in 1996.
